If you’re looking for nineteenth century queer literary pornography, you’d be better off with “The Sins of the Ci Calling this book pornographic is inaccurate–it is largely a love story, and a tragic one at that, that just happens to acknowledge that sex and sexuality is sometimes part of love and romance.
It’s not badly written overall. This progressive point of view, and the appropriately unaffected prose used to tell the tale, validate Teleny’s position as the fountainhead of the modern approach to gender and sexuality in literature.
While the possibility that one of its writers was Oscar Wilde, an idea that grows more intriguing as one reads on, will probably remain its primary draw, it is also one of the first books to transcend its pornographic trappings and explore the emotional life of its protagonist.
You can follow the story without the French, if you have to.
Four stars for style. The plot doesn’t develop until the second half. It does give some insight into sexual life at the time, with scenes in a cruising area and at a wild hedonistic orgy. You cared for the relationship, and that is something that is extremely rare in books teleng days.
