This book was really good, and the suspense is wonderful. This is an acclaimed book. The author is good at atmosphere and building a mood. Also I can easily see this boring some people out of their minds even if they are fantasy fans. The father, a scholar, is obsessed with the wood and often disappears for weeks at a time to plumb its depths. Both had seen mythagos as children, but their father explained them away as travelling Gypsies.

I believe that the novel was composed of three separate novellas, and that may explain some of the disjointedness. The order in which the Mythago cycle works were written and published does not correspond to the order of events within the realm of the cycle.

If you want a good stand-alone fantasy book I recommend it. Steven returns from the war to his family home, to recover and reunite with his brother, some time after his father’s death.
